Applications of beeswax

Beeswax is a secretion produced by young honey bees (Apis mellifera) and the foundation of every beehive. When newly produced, beeswax is light yellow in color but over time it darkens to a golden yellow. Due to contact with propolis and brood it can also turn brown with time which is why natural beeswax comes in many shapes and colors from the beekeeper. While consisting of mainly esters of fatty acids, it’s composition is quite complex with more then 200 other minor components that have been identified and add to the characteristics of this wonderful product. Thanks to this unique natural blend of components, beeswax has many applications in various different fields and industries:

Beeswax candles have been produced for thousands of years and offer many advantages over artificial alternatives such as paraffin or stearin. Our beeswax complies with norm RAL-GZ 041 and produces beautiful long- and well-burning candles with a sweet natural scent.

Due to the unique properties of beeswax there are countless possibilities for application in an industrial context, from wood and shoe polishes to cleaning agents or lubricants as well as in many types of varnishes. The most important factors for industrial use are good filtering to remove impurities before blending with other ingredients and the pureness as a raw material, which is why we provide laboratory analysis for every batch of beeswax that we sell.

Beeswax is edible and while it does not provide real nutritional value, it’s properties and antibacterial nature make it a perfect coating for many types of fruits and vegetables, improving the overall look, freshness and longevity. It is also used by renowned chefs worldwide in cooking as a glaze for meat or candies. Our beeswax is approved for human consumption and adheres to EU standard E901, guaranteeing the safe use as a food additive.

As a natural ingredient beeswax is used in many cosmetic products such as blush, eye shadow, lip gloss, lip balm and moisturizers. We offer high grade beeswax pastilles as a cosmetic ingredient both in natural yellow (cera flava) and bleached in white color (cera alba) both as regular and premium grade quality with controlled pesticide residues to avoid migration into cosmetic products.

Its beneficial antibacterial and antioxidant properties make beeswax a valuable ingredient in various pharmaceutical products. We offer Ph. Eur. grade beeswax that makes excellent emulsions and is used in the excipient base for pharmaceutical creams and ointments and as a component in medicinal formulations such as hydrogels, dressings and pastes.

Using only good and quality-approved beeswax foundations when increasing colony numbers is of the utmost importance in modern beekeeping to keep the internal beeswax-cycle clean. While many suppliers offer and promote industrial grade beeswax for beekeeping, we only sell batches that are 100% pure beeswax with controlled pesticide levels and analytical reports by accredited laboratories.

Pure beeswax is a rare product and only amounts to between 2 – 8% of the honey that is produced in a beehive, depending on the beekeeping techniques used. But not all beeswax is of the same quality: the treatments that a beekeeper uses to keep the bees healthy has an important influence on the residues that can migrate into the wax and the extensive use of pesticides, insecticides and fungicides makes it difficult to find beeswax which does not contain traces of some of these agents.
Because of these differences and missing quality standards for beeswax in many industries, it is important to know which wax type and origin best to use for a specific purpose.
